Washington, DC — The campaign of United States presidential candidate Barack Obama has denied reports that Obama appealed to a militant group to end hostilities in the Niger Delta. "Senator Obama has not made any recent comment on the situation in the Niger Delta," the campaign in press guidance provided to AllAfrica.   "The Senator does advocate an end to the violence in the Delta region and urges all parties to establish a process for addressing the relevant issues and grievances in order to create the conditions for peace and economic development," the statement said.

Leadership (Abuja) Royal Dutch Shell over the weekend shut down more of its production following fresh attacks on its facilities by militants in the Niger Delta. Militants suspected to be members of the Henry Okah-led Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger (MEND) on Saturday launched an attack on a flow station in southern Bayelsa State.

Attacks on oil facilities in the Niger-Delta allegedly by militants fighting for 'resource control' have been narrowed down to sabotage by the chief of the defence staff, CDS, General Owoye Azazi. "I believe it's an act of sabotage. If you want to control resources, why would you blow up those resources? So that they are not available to anybody? I believe it's an act of sabotage", the CDS said, weekend.
