Lagos — Men of the military Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta yesterday killed five gunmen after exchanging fire at Cawthorne Channel, an area in Rivers State, a military spokesman said yesterday. Nigerian navy vessels encountered the gunmen in three speedboats early on Thursday while on patrol in the Cawthorne Channel, an area that is a known hotbed for violence due to its close proximity to key oil facilities.

A coalition of Niger Delta militants under the umbrella of Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), has submitted a 10-point demand to the Niger Delta Technical Committee. The JRC's submission is from the three militant groups of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, (MEND), The Reformed Niger Delta People's Volunteer Force & The Martyrs Brigade.

About fifteen militants were feared dead Wednesday night when they encountered men of the Joint Task Force in Bonny River. According to spokesman of the security body in Rivers State, Lieutenant Col Sagir Musa the militants in six speed boats had made effort to attack a location where the security body had its gun boats but were repelled.

Leadership (Abuja) Yenagoa — A militia group known as the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC) yesterday forwarded a memorandum to the Technical Committee on the Niger Delta, faulting the composition of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and the parameters adopted by the fund for the award of scholarships in the region.
